Train Layout phase 4

For some unknown reason, the boys asked me if I could add a plane crash scene, we had a few old OO size Spitfire planes, and after finding an old Airfix fire engine again on eBay, I came up with the following......The plane is die-cast and was heated with a gas burner, so I could bend the wings and have the 'Burned effect '....You'll also note that I burned the grass as well (second picture has a 1950's Fire Engine)

I think that building this little scene was a mistake, as this then got the boys excited and they wanted to add in some more 'War' scenes! This gave me a few issues, as we were now a little confused over what era the layout was from, after much debate we decided on the late 1940's/early 1950's. But of course there are still a few more modern items included within the layout

I started off with a design for an RAF base, eventually finding that the simplest option would be to add a 'Blank' of wood to one side of the layout, where the airstrip and building would be added. The buildings below are all from Airfix, either purchased in kit form or purchased from eBay - Note that the hanger is actually the old Hornby Engineering works building, simply painted to blend in with he RAF base

Note the Hurricane taking off and the base under attached from a german Stuka!

The fuel line is simple blue wire!
Former Hornby Engine works!
Again model grass and Tippex was used!
I also took the opportunity to add a road to the fire station (note the 1950's vehicles! - ish)
As well as adding in some telegraph poles and wire - Fishing gut

So you would have thought that now was a good time to stop, but...........they then wanted a battle scene as well!

Again, Airfix, eBay and a few other things came to the rescue, I had this idea of the Germans invading the UK, a 'What If' scenario...To do this I thought we'd need some kind of bridge over the railway, we would also of course need some defences, so this is what i finally came up with

This is originally a Hornby train bridge, I built ramps using wood covered in model grass so that trains could still pass under - the stones were added for effect.....All the men on the bridge are glued, but all others are free to move so the boys can play!
I now had to add some British defences, and found the Airfix Shore Defence kit again on eBay, as were the british tanks and guns, I also created a troop/transporter train, which carry's two sets of AA guns

And that was that!

I'd finished, there are no more plans at the moment to make further changes, but I do feel that the village takes up too much space, so perhaps a smaller village to make room for..............
