I decided that buying a STS set would be too expensive and I also wanted to experiment a little, so I am planning to design and build a home made STS off road track - thanks to all of the help and suggestions from 'slotforum.com' especially the link shown here: building a layout.
This is going to take quite a few months, but I'll add pictures and updates as and when they are available, here are all the current phases (phase 1 is on this page):
Phase 2
Phase 3

Here's the area that I plan to create the layout, where the base/frame of the track will go. Following pics show the initial start to the frame. |

Obviously room is at a premium and the rafters do get in the way at times (plenty of bruises on my head to prove that!) - but the area identified is approximately 25" by 74" and as you can see from the next few pictures I've now managed to board the area for the layout, using the cheapest wood I could find.....wall cladding, quite thin, but I've found it's a great base for this find if layout and I've used it for my 1:32 scalextric layout (see link) |

You'll notice that, there is a gap between the end of the base and where the roof slopes down .....I wanted to fill this and eventually make it look like a mountain cliff face - so I decided on using wire mesh (see pics below) |

|
| I also wanted to have a slope for the circuit and built a simple frame using the mess, the board you see is just to give an idea of what I'm planning ....I also include one of my STS Land Rovers to give idea of the scale. |

Well that's enough for phase1........need to now start mapping out the circuit on some paper and begin the design and stages for the build |
